Justin Sheehy: Concept Art Submitted
A lot of people didn't care for the boomerang, so i'll probably replace it and then print the final
I think I just thought about it way too hard and I just need to finish it

Sorry I'm being slow - this one still isn't finished, but you can see I've added more definition to parts of the background (haven't touched the building yet).
As for the next phase of my individual project, I've been asked to help with matte painting for John Pettingill's "Sleddin'" animation. Here is a verrrrry rough first experiment with layout for one of the scenes.

Concept WIP
I didn't end up printing because they were having problems at the time, and I wanted to make the critiques in time. This probably won't be the one I use for the final print, but it's currently the most developed & what I'd used as the initial WIP (I added more depth to the background ...hopefully. It still looks undefined though), and I wanted to make the deadline.
Concept Art - WIP
Here is another work in progress. I still haven't decided if I want to define that giant archway a bit more or leave it ambiguous like it is here. I also need to fix the windows in the building and tighten up a lot of other details.

WIP #2
After restarting my stupid painting for the 3rd time, I feel like this one is actually making some decent progress. It's no where where I want it to be, but I'll get there soon.

Random artist Paul Chadeisson that I ran across at deviant art. He has lots of great sci-fi scenes, especially cityscapes.

Justin Sheehy Concept Art WIP3
I need to push the lower area back a bit, fix a bit more of the cliff edge. I feel like I've actually flattened the space in the background, but hopefully improved the foreground... you know, by adding one...
Due next week, it's gonna be a good weekend =]

Gnoman Video: Feng Zhu Concept art design
In this video tutorial, he went through his process from thumbnails to sketch to overlay to colour. He did both environments and character design, and went through how he goes about creating both of these things before he ever decides to make the final. This is important both for composition and perspective.

Thumbnailing and Final Color Sketch
This video detailed a particular artist's approach to fantasy illustration. Using traditional media such as prisma color markers, oil paints, and acrylic paints, J.P. shows how he blocks out and articulates figures and concepts.
The following link will take you to the artist's video page.
Progress
So haven't posted in awhile.
Started with these speed paints based on the animation I'm doing in studio and ended up taking the forest one further.
But I wasn't really feeling it, so I looked at reference.
These are by Alex Mandra, from Apollo 18. I really really like the simple use of color on a very single colored background to make it really come out. And the use of really simple, strong lines to say alot. Really the last one.
So then had an idea of this cowboy guy in the desert with some old-styled robot buried under the sand like part of a structure and spat out these.
But I really couldn't get an awesome dynamic perspective down, so I made it out in maya and cheated alot and didn't really have to draw perspective and started work on this.
Which is definitely WIPWIP.

concept of concept
I don't really like where it's going! I was aiming to create the depth out of something that's not actually a landscape, building... or other typical location. I'm also going for a playful mood that leans a little bit toward illustration, possibly centering around an action or cinematic moment. I posted a few images I found on CG society that seem to combine all that.
So, the tentacle things are supposed to be neurons but... more dramatic? I think it just turned out too much like a vague sci-fi or fantasy thing, and I couldn't find a way to integrate them in anything other than open space or a web. So I might develop some of the other sketches.
Justin Sheehy Concept Art WIP 02
Moving right along, I'm very happy with where this is going.
My next improvements now that I've roughed in a far plane is to add the near plane, scale, and finally, to res up!
Concept Art Inspiration
The artist that I picked as my inspiration is Par Olofsson, I really like the complexity he envisions while keeping a central style in his work.
Concept Art WIP
I really want to make this seem taller and loom more than it is so far. I also want to push the sky/ waterfall farther back and pull the rock formations forward. It needs much more development.
Thomas Storey Concept WIP 2
I have had a frustratingly small amount of time to work on this over the last two weeks. I hope that changes this week.
