Matte Painting

I made some corrections as suggested in the last critique.  I still won't call it done, since I need to keep updating depending on what the lighters tell me to do, but it's farther along.  I went ahead and cropped out the bottom since that will all be covered up by the foreground.

Final(?) Matte Painting

I've sent this off to the lighters in the project and am waiting for approval.  This is close to finished, but depending on what they say I may need to make some more changes.

Rachel Cunningham - WIP

I'm helping create matte paintings for a group project called "Sleddin.'"  The sky is getting close but I haven't worked the ground yet.  They wanted to show a transition from snowstorm on the right to sunrise on the left.

I'm also generating creature concepts for my thesis project.  I'm basing the designs on different phobias.  Pictured above is "fear of making decisions."

The following images are older work - I'm just including them for context.

"Fear of gaiety"

Initial sketches for "fear of eyes"

Top to bottom: fear of hair, fear of being bound, fear of hands

Sorry I'm being slow - this one still isn't finished, but you can see I've added more definition to parts of the background (haven't touched the building yet).

As for the next phase of my individual project, I've been asked to help with matte painting for John Pettingill's "Sleddin'" animation.  Here is a verrrrry rough first experiment with layout for one of the scenes.

Concept Art - WIP

Here is another work in progress.  I still haven't decided if I want to define that giant archway a bit more or leave it ambiguous like it is here.  I also need to fix the windows in the building and tighten up a lot of other details.

Concept Art WIP

Reposted a slightly larger image - also I went ahead and shrank the second dragon.

Gnomon Workshop: The Techniques of Scott Robertson

I watched Scott's video on "Creating Unique Environments." As someone who has a lot of trouble getting started designing an environment, I am intrigued by an exercise that he uses to get started. Using markers (it can be charcoal, paint, or any other layer-able medium) he creates abstract spaces based on shapes. He doesn't have any plan about the content - he doesn't even focus too carefully on perspective - he just uses value and variation in scale to create the impression of atmosphere. He then layers several of these in Photoshop and plays around with different compositing methods to create more complex, interesting space and color palette. He then resizes the frame and moves the view around, frequently switching different layers on and off until he finds an interesting composition (he describes the process like finding images in clouds).

He ultimately goes on to overlay perspective lines and paint, slowly creating a story out of what he sees.

Concept Art Inspiration: Karl Simon Gustafsson and Nathan Fowkes

I looked primarily at 2 artists (images from conceptartworld.com)

The first is Karl Simon Gustafsson.  I like the way he handles fire and sparse, concentrated light sources in dark spaces.

I also really enjoy Nathan Fowkes' work.  The way he exaggerates colors and creates a sense of depth in interior spaces is really nice.

Need help deciding...

Hi everyone,

Could I get your feedback on which "portrait 1" to continue?  Neither is finished, neither really looks like me, but I'm okay with that as long as it looks like a face at this point.  The second is more stylized, but I'm leaning more towards it at the moment (possibly because I got really frustrated with the first one).  Anyway I have to focus on one and I'd appreciate any thoughts - thanks.
