TJF: Forest Concept Final

It gets really dark in the thumbnail, but it looks decent at actual res.
This took forever to get a technique down for, and I wish I had more time to polish it even further, but that's how it goes.

Once I added the light source, everything just fell into place. It was beautiful, in a twisted, janky (forest) way.

TJF: Witches house concept

Finally a witch's house I'm happy with. Instead of bracing it with the arms, since they are so spindle-y I decided to make them into smoke-stacks instead

Justin Sheehy: Concept Art Submitted

A lot of people didn't care for the boomerang, so i'll probably replace it and then print the final
I think I just thought about it way too hard and I just need to finish it

Justin Sheehy Concept Art WIP3

I need to push the lower area back a bit, fix a bit more of the cliff edge. I feel like I've actually flattened the space in the background, but hopefully improved the foreground... you know, by adding one...

Due next week, it's gonna be a good weekend =]

Justin Sheehy Concept Art WIP 02

Moving right along, I'm very happy with where this is going.
My next improvements now that I've roughed in a far plane is to add the near plane, scale, and finally, to res up!

Justin Sheehy: Concept Art Progress

After many do overs and much fighting, I think I'm finally feeling out a concept that I find a connection to. Here is my third iteration over, we'll see where it takes me.

Concept Artist Inspiration: David Levy

Artist: David Levy

David Levy is the artist who gave the Gnomon talk I watched about concept painting with brushes. I looked up his portfolio and found his work rather inspiring, especially his futuristic pieces. They tend to have very deep space, and they do have the typical mech or starship approach. I hope to make a concept that is perhaps similar to this.

David Levy: From Speedpainting to Concept Art

Summary:

This is a really cool series for environment painting
Levy starts by making brushes for the first 3 of 8 segments of the video, and then proceeds to use only those brushes to create several rough idea paintings, followed by a speedpainting that he systematically refines into a full on environment concept.

Notes:

  • using size + opacity jitter at Pencil pressure gives you a quick way to mold depth in an environment
  • Test your brushes on a non-grascrale gradient to see subtle effects more clearly
  • Clean brushes by inverting them to ensure there's no left over noise around the brush
  • Much of brush creation is about creating particles that can be flipped and randomized to make happy accidents
  • Very often, brush testing just becomes painting, so create brushes often as a brainstorming exercise

Cover Summary

...From two basic brushes, David shows you how to develop your own library of custom brushes that will allow you to gain speed and efficiency during your speedpainting process. Beginning with examples such as mountains, forests and clouds, David then leads you through the creation of a concept art painting, from rough sketches to a final piece with environment, vehicles and characters. Using texture brushes, you will then learn to refine and complete the painting without losing the original dynamism and composition of the sketch...

SpeedMumblings+Justin

Speed paintings done in class. The second received an overhall from Justin from a three point to the end of the forest we see above.

Justin Sheehy Speed Paint Exercise

The first one is me, the second one is collaboration with Josh Aoki. I laid down the color scheme and the rough blocking, he fleshed out the cave, opened up the far plane, and added in the orange and the ships.
